Great value for exterior lightingDate: 2008-04-16 Rating: 8 out of 10I replaced a 500 watt high pressure sodium light with this unit by Lights of America, using less than 100 watts. It will pay for itself in a few months by the cost savings. The color of light is excellent, and it is silent (the old light buzzed up a storm). And it provides about the same amount of light as the old, loud, power sucking fixture I replaced.
The entire housing and lens are all plastic. If placed in full sunlight, I expect they will fall apart in 5 or 8 years from UV. And the down-tilt adjustment is plastic as well, and a bit awkward to adjust. However, the adjustment is something you will do only on the install, and not again. But for the price, I can't see rating it less than 4 stars due to less than bullet proof construction. I painted the grey housing parts white using spraypaint designed for plastic (available at Ace Hardware) for greater longevity (mask over the photo cell if you don't want to blank that out w/the paint). Installation was a breeze; the mounting flange is set up for a standard 4" octagonal fixture box, or can be screwed directly to any wood surface. Other mounting arrangements are certainly possible as well.
Mine is about 15 feet off the ground and lights a radius of over 30 feet well enough to work at night, and further as far as walking or for security (I'd say over 60 feet for the latter).
The price here on Amazon is great BTW, as I paid much more at a major home improvement store.
