It holds the skewers up above the cooking grate, which works well for delicate items like shrimp that tend to stick when they touch the hot surface.
One of the best things about it is the flat skewers. If you are using round skewers, as I was before I bought this, you are in for a treat. They work just like the round ones except the food won't rotate on them. That means when you turn the skewer, the food turns with it -- what a great idea! It delivers very nice and tasty results and is easy to handle on the BBQ. In terms of cleaning (should not be put to dishwasher due to nickel plating) and durability it would be great if they were made of stainless steel.
